Corals and Cameos
Precious coral is the common name given to Corallium Rubrum which is used for making jewelry. Coral is durable and intensely colored red or pink material. As it is natural, it is very hard to work to obtain a good shape to use in jewelry, and more the shape’s surface is smooth and perfect, and the color is homogeneous, more the object is appreciated. That’s why coral jewels are unique.
Cameo is a method of carving an object such as a shell or a layered stone obtaining a relief image.
The relief image is the result of a contrasting colour to the background; this is achieved by carefully carving a piece of material (shell usually) with a flat plane where two contrasting colours meet, removing all the first colour except for the image to leave a contrasting background.
